Peace Is Possible!

IT'S TIME TO MAKE PEACE A PRIORITY!

By creating a cabinet level Department of Peace and Nonviolence, the United States will assert that peace is a priority in this country.

This website was launched in April 2007 to educate the public about the Department of Peace Campaign and to serve the Idaho Peace Alliance, a group of dedicated volunteers working to pass legislation currently in Congress (HR 808) to create a Department of Peace and Nonviolence. A grassroots movement is underway all across the country.  Be a part of this historic effort and be the change!

People from across America gathered for the 2007 Peace Alliance National Conference, including an Idaho delegation of five women.  We learned about conflict resolution from the experts, listened to inspiring speakers like Deepak Chopra, Michael Beckwith, Marianne Williamson, and James O'Dea and lobbied Congress with over 220 meetings on Capitol Hill!

What Will the Department of Peace and Nonviolence Do?
Domestically, the Department of Peace and Nonviolence will develop policies and allocate resources to effectively reduce the levels of domestic and gang violence, child abuse and various other forms of societal discord. Under one umbrella, the Department will build upon and bring together community peace programs currently in place around the country that have been proven successful.

Internationally, the Department will bring together highly trained experts in violence prevention, conflict resolution and peace building and advise the President and Congress on the most sophisticated techniques and innovative ideas regarding peace-creation among nations. It will also research and analyze the root causes of war and other forms of violence to help prevent conflicts from escalating to the point of violence.

A Peace Academy, on par with the Military Service Academies, will train civilian peacekeepers and the military in the latest nonviolent conflict resolution strategies and approaches.

The Secretary of Peace will sit at the table of power to directly advise the President.

A trip to Norway has reinforced Keith Ellison's support for a bill that would create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace.

The Democratic congressman, who represents Minnesota's Fifth District with its strong Norwegian heritage, spent last week in the Scandinavian country to learn about peace and justice issues. The trip was paid for by the House Financial Services Committee, on which he sits.

In an interview from Oslo last week, Ellison said he would reemphasize the importance of the bill, authored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio.

8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates: Charter for a World Without Violence by Sunny
CHARTER FOR A WORLD WITHOUT VIOLENCE

original document: http://www.nobelforpeace-summits.org/ENG/PDF/2007/CHARTER_ULTIMATE.pdf

Violence is a preventable disease.

No state or individual can be secure in an insecure world. The values of nonviolence in intention, thought, and practice have grown from an option to a necessity. These values are expressed in their application between states, groups and individuals.

We are convinced that adherence to the values of nonviolence will usher in a more peaceful, civilized world order in which more effective and fair governance, respectful of human dignity and the sanctity of life itself, may become a reality.

Our cultures, our histories, and our individual lives are interconnected and our actions are interdependent. Especially today as never before, we believe, a truth lies before us: our destiny is a common destiny. That destiny will be defined by our intentions, decisions and actions today.

We are further convinced that creating a culture of peace and nonviolence, while a difficult and long process, is both necessary and noble. Affirmation of the values contained in this Charter is a vital step to ensuring the survival and development of humanity and the achievement of a world without violence.

Panelists discuss forming U.S. Department of Peace by Sunny
By Natalie Hale
Deseret Morning News Published: September 23, 2007

Community members gathered at the downtown Salt Lake City Library on Saturday to discuss the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace.

In conjunction with the U.N.-sanctioned International Day of Peace and the city's second annual "Imagine Peacefest," three university professors, a Hindu priest and a Moab Realtor debated the validity and timing of the proposal, currently being considered by Congress. They loosely defined what they believe the department's role should be in domestic and international spheres.

The resolution also calls on Michigan Congressman Mike Rogers [R-8 th Congressional District] to co-sponsor the bill and urges Senators Debbie Stabenow [D-MI] and Carl Levin [D-MI] to offer a companion bill in the U.S. Senate.

Citizens Join National Peace Campaign by Sunny
by Shirley Thagard on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Coeur d'Alene Press:  On Friday May 11, 2007 women and mothers of North Idaho delivered apple pies to the offices of Senators Craig and Crapo and Rep. Sali. The representatives in the offices were very receptive and as we discussed with them the tenants of the Department of Peace and Nonviolence, we felt new awareness had been raised.

You Can Help

Make the reduction and prevention of violence a priority—through your donations, your votes, and in your daily life.

1) Stand for Peace in Congress

Sign the Petition.

Congress is a reactive body. We must come together to make our voices heard and tell our representatives in Washington that violence reduction and prevention must be a top priority. Sign the petition and let Congress know that you stand for peace. Ask your friends to sign the petition as well. We will deliver the petition to Congress on September 11, 2008.
